This month we are going to be talking all about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. What is the gospel? Is it true and can I put my trust in it? What happens after I accept the gospel? How do I share it? And how do I live the gospel out in my every day life?

We will be discussing the foundations of the Christian faith, the simplicity and power of the gospel, and even how others have tried to water it down.

We are going back to the basics, y’all! The Bible talks about the gospel like this, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the POWER OF GOD for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek (Romans 1:16). The gospel is the power of God, it is what billions of people throughout history have placed their hope in at even great peril to themselves.

People have been martyred, beat, lied about, betrayed, forsaken by family and much more because they believed in the power of God through Jesus Christ. Who would give their life to something if they didn’t believe it to be the absolute truth?

If you are not a believer in Christ Im so grateful you are reading this post! I encourage you to read through and find out what the gospel means and how it effects you personally. I also encourage you to read through the scripture quotes that I will share and to consider what God is saying to you through them.

If you are a believer but aren’t sure how to articulate the gospel I hope this post gives you clarity and a place to start asking God how He would have you to live in light of the great commission. Jesus commanded His disciples to share the gospel and I hope you would prayerfully consider how you could start to do that in your everyday life as we are reminded of the power and purpose of the gospel.

Finally, if you are a believer but have found yourself connected to organizations that have been more about consumer christianity (what can I get from God? How will He bless ME?What is God saying to ME?) Then I hope this post would wake you up the the realization that the command Jesus gave those who loved Him and received Him as their savior was to share with others the same hope they believed in. So often in our Christian walk we become selfish, prone to believe God will and should bless us because we follow Him. One verse that comes to mind is found in Luke 9:23-25, “And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?”.

Those are strong words. We are to deny ourself and take up our cross, which means to be willing to die in order to follow Jesus! Not what some churches would popularly preach. Many would tell you God is going to bless you, give you a car, give you a house, make you a millionare, as if being a follower of Christ means He has to play the role of your genie in a bottle. God may give you those things but He may also call you to sacrifice everything, to live a life of suffering like the One we follow, or to pour yourself out for your neighbor. I hope this post reinvigorates your passion to live a life poured out for Christ at whatever personal cost and to connect yourself to Bible believing churches who point you to the gospel at all times!

What is the Gospel?

In the New Testament the word Gospel is εὐαγγέλιον and is translated as “good news”. What is the good news the Bible talks about? It is referring to Jesus Christ Himself. It is the good news of how we can be saved from judgement and be in communion with God. It refers to believing in the life, death, burial, and ressurrection of Jesus Christ. That He, showing great love and mercy for us, left heaven to live a sinless life on earth. Through that sinless life He was able to pay the penalty for our sin by dying the death we deserved and taking on every bad thing we have ever done or will do so that we could be reconciled to God.

John Piper says it like this “The gospel is the good news that the everlasting and ever-increasing joy of the never-boring, ever-satisfying Christ is ours freely and eternally by faith in the sin-forgiving death and hope-giving resurrection of Jesus Christ.” What a way to put it!

Why do we need the gospel?

So why do we need the gospel in the first place? Why do we need this Jesus to save us? The gospel was given because we had a PROBLEM, God gave us a SOLUTION, and we must have a RESPONSE.

The first man and women God created were Adam and Eve. They we made perfect in God’s image and lived daily in God’s presence. The devil came to tempt Adam and Eve to sin against God and they gave in. Because they who were designed to live a sinless life with God had now sinned against Him, they now had to live separated from him forever. After the fall of Adam and Eve sin entered the world and all of their offspring from generation to generation   would be cut off from God, bound by sin. (Read Genesis 2:4-3:24) Their decision to disobey God meant they rejected His authority in their lives. Because of God’s holiness and righteousness He cannot overlook sin and rebellion. Because of Adam and Eve, ” … all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Take a look at what the Bible says about our sinful rebellion and how that effects our relationship with God:

“For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” (Romans 1:20-21)

“as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;” (Romans 3:10)

“But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear” (Isaiah 59:2)

So what is the solution to our sin and our separation from God? It is the gospel of Jesus Christ, the good news He brings us and instructs us on how we are to be saved.

We already discovered we are separated from God but how is our relationship with Him restored and how are we saved from our sin which demands the payment of death? Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”. Because we are all sinners we deserved death, the payment for the sins we committed against God but Christ showed His great love for us by becoming the sacrifice we were supposed to pay. “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Christ loves us so much that He chose to die a horrific death and take on our sin as if it was his own so that we could be forgiven our sins and be reconciled to God. “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Our Response:

The gospel demands a response from humanity. This is not a subject we can be indifferent about, either you accept what Christ did on the cross or you deny His free gift of salvation to you. You must choose.

If you believe the gospel of Jesus Christ is true and you recognize your sinful nature and your need for a savior to do what you cannot and save you from sin and reconcile you to God then the only response is one of acceptance.

The Bible says, “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:9-14)

There is no special thing you must do, no religious ritual, just confess Jesus is Lord and believe God raised Him from the dead having beat death and therefore giving you eternal life with Him. Believe that WHOEVER calls on the name of Jesus will be saved.

Prayer of Salvation:

If you are convinced of your need of a savior and want to give your life to Jesus Christ pray this prayer:

God, I recognize my sinful and rebellious nature and that I have been separated from you because of it. I repent of my sins and I long to be reconciled to you through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. I believe Jesus lived a perfect life and died for me, taking on my sins and dying the death I deserved. I believe He died, was buried, and rose to life again on the third day, destroying death once and for all. I give my life away to Christ and ask that you would send the Holy Spirit to live within me as a guarantee of the eternal life you have given me through Christ. Help me to obey you and to give my life fully to you because you gave your life for me, Jesus. Its in your name I pray, Amen.

If you just prayed this pray I just want to say that you have made the single most important design you will ever make in your entire life. I encourage you to purchase a Bible if you don’t already have one. Also, once we are apart of the Body of Christ we should be connected to a Bible believing church. Look for churches in your area that are gospel driven. As you connect with a gospel-centered church find someone who can give you guidance in your new life with Christ, don’t do this alone.

If you are already a believer, I hope this post helped you to better articulate the gospel to those around you and I hope it fueled your passion for Christ by remembering what He did for you.

I encourage everyone to look through the scripture I included throughout this post and start to memorize them. This will be an invaluable tool for those who are still considering the Christian faith and for those who have a desire to share the good news with others.
